The lovely calm aura of The Chalk Gallery is not necessarily what it seems.
As a cooperative all the artists involved have different jobs within the gallery to ensure its smooth running. It may not be apparent when you wander into the gallery, but the analogy of the serene swan gliding effortlessly across calm waters whilst going like the clappers underneath is not far from the truth but that’s not exactly the image we wish to convey!
Apart from the range of jobs involved each artist has a commitment to working two days a month in the gallery. This is one of the best bits, to be able to speak to customers about the artwork and its a real boost when someone is particularly interested in yours! The life of an artist is pretty solitary so any input preferably positive is welcome! However, we’re a fairly thick skinned bunch and art is definitely not one size fits all!
The gallery has some widespread talent amongst its artists, including architects, publishers, teachers, web designers, graphic artists, all of which are put to use in the gallery.

Social media… is such a massive thing nowadays and we’re very lucky to have someone who is totally red hot at keeping us fresh and up-to-date with the rest of the world.
The Rota… 15 artists all with different time constraints need to be organised so that the gallery is open when it should be. Fortunately, we have someone who would appear to be the daughter of Einstein to sort it for us.
Maintenance… The gallery is in an old listed building, looked after by the multitasking team of one.
The Hanging Team… The presentation is essential. We need it to look wonderful, not just to entice our customers in but ultimately for them to buy a piece of artwork they love. With such a diverse range such as paintings, textiles, ceramics, photography, glassware displaying it to the best advantage is not for the faint hearted, as you are having to please all the artists as well. A tall member also helps!
Admin… It has to be done and so everyone tries to avoid the accountant's wrath and penalties are issued for falling short, namely a box of posh biscuits to be bought and shared.
The above is just a small taste of what is involved in the running of a cooperative gallery. It would be great if you could pay us a visit and experience The Chalk Gallery for yourself!
