I was born and raised in West Yorkshire and studied architecture at Newcastle University. Following graduation I moved to London where I practiced as an architect for many years before moving to Brighton 10 years or so ago.

Discovering the countryside around Brighton, the beautiful South Downs and the Weald inspired me to try painting these rural landscapes. This initial interest developed into painting buildings and urban landscapes in which I have always been very interested throughout my working life. I was initially drawn to some of the industrial landscapes in the north and particularly those around the Calder and the Leeds Liverpool Canals in places such as Saltaire, Shipley, Hebden Bridge and the moors around Ilkley where I went to school.

Artists who I particularly admire include Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious, Maurice Wade, David Hockney, Norman Ackroyd the sculptor Anthony Caro and the American artists Charles Sheeler and Edward Hopper.
