Ros Lymer

I am a Sussex artist and teacher, living and working at home in Brighton, and my work focusses on both abstracted expressive paintings and collaged mixed media textile art.
My paintings often emerge from both observed and imagined forms in the landscape, and from objects found in woods or along the shoreline—shells, stones, roots, shadows and negative spaces. I’m inspired by the linear rhythm of fenceposts, the stubbly marks of harvested fields, and the cracks threading through cliff faces and walls. These elements become starting points for exploring shape, texture and the quieter patterns held within the land.
My textiles practice explores the textures, colours and surfaces encountered in everyday life. I’m drawn to the quiet poetry of small, captured moments—fragments of fabric, repeated marks, boxes of old photographs and discarded objects. Collecting and re‑using materials is central to my process, allowing traces of previous lives to inform and transform the work.
Originally from East Grinstead in West Sussex, I completed a degree in Fine Art Painting at Manchester Polytechnic in 1990, creating large‑scale assemblages that combined objects, paint and textured media. I have lived in Brighton for 30 years and continue to work from my home studio.
