Susie Hallows | Noticing the overlooked

Susie Hallows takes inspiration from the world around her, from people enjoying the Sussex coastline to starling murmurations, birds and insects. She is interested in everyday things that are easy to overlook, and the small details that catch her eye.

With a background in illustration and graphics, Susie likes to simplify what she sees into shapes, silhouettes and lines, distilling the character of a subject without including every detail.

She makes her ceramics both on the wheel and by hand building with slabs of clay. Each design starts as a drawing, which she simplifies and cuts into a stencil. Once the clay has been bisque fired, she applies the stencil and glazes over the surface. Removing the stencil reveals the design in the natural clay beneath, creating a contrast between the glaze and the unglazed surface.

Her work brings together her love of drawing, ceramics and observing the world around her. She hopes her pieces encourage people to take a second look at the everyday things they might otherwise pass by.
