Throwing Shapes

Sculpture and mixed media

Throwing Shapes is a collection of bold, abstract works made entirely from found and waste materials. From painted offcuts to scrap wood and old packaging, each piece celebrates the overlooked and the discarded—transformed through colour,
composition, and play.

The exhibition features five free-standing sculptures alongside small wall-based works, all mounted on a custom-built rotating display unit. Nothing is hung on the gallery walls, reinforcing a sculptural approach that positions every element of the show —display included—as part of the 3D experience.  A limited-edition book, documenting the project and its development, is also available.

Steve Bannatyne was born in Belfast and studied Graphic
Design at Central Saint Martins after an early foundation in Art and Design at Exeter College. His work is rooted in environmental awareness, using discarded materials to explore memory, time, and human traces on the landscape. Each piece reflects a deep engagement with place, material, and the quiet stories found in waste.
