I like to paint places that are unusual and less discovered – landscapes in Kent, Sussex and beyond. Many of these pictures have been the fruit of simply walking around. I have always liked to wander and explore: following the alley that leads to an undiscovered part of town; taking the path that leads to a ruined building in the woods.

When I have discovered somewhere that intrigues me, I will make some sketches if I can and also take photos.  I will then make a drawing at home that aims to bring out the intrinsic atmosphere and experience of a place. Sometimes this will be quite changed and distorted; at other times I will leave it much as it looked. This design is then transferred to a canvas and I begin to paint.
