After qualifying at West Sussex College of Art and Design in the late 1970s in visual communication I have been a graphic designer for most of my life, although I have always been a part time artist.
I usually work in acrylic paint on board or canvas, as this allows me to work quickly using bold gestural marks, enjoying the qualities of paint to suggest the excitement and joy found in colour and form.
I am inspired by the natural landscape of the South Downs area: the patterns imposed on it by agriculture, the different colours of the seasons and the tranquillity and isolation found in rural spaces. I attempt to strike a chord of connection with the countryside in the viewer, remembered from being in the landscape. My paintings often depict the pathway ahead, leading the viewer on what might be a spiritual journey through sunlight and shadows towards something just out of view, or glimpsed fleetingly through trees.
