I enjoy working directly and nearly all of my work is made in front of the subject. I like the hustle and bustle of everyday life and trying to capture the essence of a place is what I find stimulating. The risk of getting things wrong and putting it right is a bit of a thrill and working with constantly changing weather in England can be challenging, but it makes for many opportunities to grab an interesting sky. I work on canvases over three or four consecutive mornings or afternoons in the same weather conditions. I usually find my compositions when I'm not actively looking for them and so I always carry a notebook to jot down an interesting view. Whatever the weather, whatever my mood I paint to see what happens. And I always enjoy being interrupted by people for a quick chat!
