I studied fine art at the University of Newcastle graduating in 1988, then going on to complete a masters degree in painting.  I was awarded the Bartlett travel scholarship and a Northern Arts travel award which enabled me to travel and paint throughout South America. I then lived in Spain and California before settling in Sussex in 1997.

My work is inspired by the colour light and magic of the changing landscape. I would love my work to trigger memories for the onlooker, be they happy or sad, of places or times that were/are special to them – a walk through the landscape, a dawn, a midnight.... I hope my work has an intimate, magical feel. I rarely paint figures in my work, but the familiar symbols such as the moon and stars act as witnesses to the scenes.

I paint in oil on traditional gesso. The surface is very important to me. I make the gesso by hand using a traditional recipe dating back centuries. It is a mix of marble dust and glue size. It is a time consuming process but well worth the effort as the surface is wonderful to paint on and becomes part of the painting itself.
